St. James Healthcare's Department of Radiation Oncology utilizes the most technologically advanced radiation therapy capabilities available today and provides the highest quality, comprehensive care to cancer patients. St. James Healthcare's Radiation Oncology Department occupies a brand new facility featuring the latest in leading-edge radiation therapy. Designed as a state-of-the-art outpatient facility, it is located on the first floor of the hospital and offers patients the added convenience of easy access and ample, drive-up/walk-in parking from the rear of the hospital.
About 50% of all cancer patients will receive radiation therapy during their course of treatment. For some patients, radiation therapy may be the only form of treatment. For others, radiation may be combined with chemotherapy and/or surgery.
Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays and electron beams to destroy cancer cells and prevent them from multiplying. Highly effective for most every part of the body, radiation is sometimes used in conjunction with surgery to eliminate any remaining cancer cells. Radiation therapy is also used in conjunction with chemotherapy. Usually causing no physical sensation, radiation therapy can relieve pain and pressure.
We provide our patients with the most technologically advanced radiation therapy treatments available to treat the whole range of common cancers. Our state-of-the-art radiation treatment equipment allows physicians to pinpoint the dose of radiation delivered anywhere in the body with greater precision than ever before, to further enhance the curative treatment of tumors and reduce side effects. Using this latest technology, called IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy), we can now treat cancer patients with greater precision and speed than previously available. Additional services in the radiation oncology department include options such as brachytherapy (radioactive implants for gynecologic cancers and certain brain tumors), and ultrasound localization in the treatment of prostate cancer as well as other site specific tumors.
At St. James Healthcare Cancer Care, our mission is to provide state-of-the-art radiation therapy, combining the newest technologies with the skills of our expert team to meet your individualized needs. We believe in the importance of caring for the whole patient, placing an emphasis on providing for both your physical and emotional comfort throughout the course of treatment.
