Oncology

St. James Healthcare Cancer Care is a collaboration between the Department of Medical Oncology and the Department of Radiation Oncology and St. James Healthcare. This collaboration helps us manage the cancer patient's complex medical care and support the patients and their families during the cancer treatment experience.

St. James Healthcare is the regional leader in the prevention of and fight against cancer. Patients have access to a pool of oncology resources and programs led by health professionals who continually develop and expand their knowledge in the cancer field. The Cancer Center's multi-disciplinary team includes our medical oncologist, James Hueftle, MD; radiation oncologist, Trent Mihalick, MD; surgeons; radiologists; primary care physicians; certified radiation oncology nurses; radiation therapy technologists; registered ultrasound technologists; social workers; physical and occupational therapists; dietitians; massage therapists; case managers; spiritual care; palliative care; and volunteers.

St. James Healthcare provides outpatient medical and radiation oncology services to the region of Southwestern Montana. Cancer incidence rates for four of seven counties in St. James' immediate market area are considerably higher than for the state of Montana as a whole. Cancer remains a major population health concern in the hospital's service area. In any given year, more than 400 residents in the service area are newly diagnosed with cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Montana and the service area.
