Histology & Cytology

I. Histology and Routine Cytology

A. Tissue Specimens, Routine - If using Unity, order #8301. If specimen is coming to lab from outpatient site fill in OP-3 form completely.

  • Place routine tissue specimens in formalin-filled tissue container (supplied by lab). Label with patient name, Medical Record #, date of collection, and Source (minimum).
  • Make out a #9 Pathology Requisition. Be sure to comment on history and diagnosis in space provided (this is a JCAHO requirement).

B. Pap Smears

  • Obtain kit from laboratory.
  • Immediately after smears are made, apply fixative (provided in kit).
  • Label frosted end of slide with patient's name.
  • Allow smears to dry before putting in cardboard container.
  • Complete St. Vincent's Cytology Service Form. Write appropriate notes on patient's history in "Comments" section.
  • Note also if Maturation Index is required.
  • This testing is referred to St. Vincent Healthcare.

C. ERA

  • Contact lab to perform ERA/PRA/Her 2 Neu testing.
  • Provide and order.
  • Testing is performed on formalin fixed tissue and will be sent to Impath as soon as specimen is available.

II. Processing of Body Fluids for Cytology

  • In Unity order #8301. (Fluids including Sputum, Gastric Aspirate, Pleural-thoracentesis, Paracentesis, Ovarian Cyst Fluid and Bronchial Washings.)
  • Bring specimen to lab immediately with appropriate requisition.
